Characters

When I began the comic strip Rats, the first characters from Rats were sloppily drawn with far apart eyes, weird posture, and the white spots in their eyes were supposed to be a glimmer, but it just didn’t work out. Around early December in 2025, the looks improved on them and the white spots became their “pupils.”

Basil

Basil, the main character starts as a baby rat, but soon grows up to be an adult. He doesn’t like babysitting his seven nephews and nine nieces, and he loves popcorn very much. He also can be oblivious, for there is a Royal Python named Montgomery (but Basil calls him Mr. Monty) who secretly plots to eat him and his kin. Basil is a brown rat, with brown fur, a gray belly, and a personality that varies from time to time.

Slick

Slick is the husband of Scrabble, and the brother-in-law of Basil. He is very handsome due to his naturally-grown Elvis-hair, but he doesn’t tend to brag about it. He’s less neglectful to watching the kids than Scrabble is, and he tends to help Basil along the way of life. Slick is a dark brown rat with naturally-grown Elvis-hair, and a caring personality.

Scrabble

Scrabble is the black-hooded sister of Basil, who is a pretty bad mom, because she tends to be neglectful to her children’s needs, but she doesn’t realize it. She can be violence-prone from time to time as well. She also is the wife of Slick and the mother of seven boys, and nine girls. Scrabble is a rat with white fur all over except for her head, which has black fur all over it.

Montgomery

Montgomery is a royal python who secretly plots to eat Basil and his family, and he has many jobs, like a mattress salesman, hotel manager, and a doctor. Basil tends to think of him as a friendly acquaintance, despite the fact that he gets a little suspicious when he sees things that can trap or kill him.

Pippin

Pippin is a gerbil who has soft golden fur, and a farsighted vision. He doesn’t have much of a personality, though. Pippin is always seen in his glass cage.

The Kids

The seven boys and nine girls (who are usually wearing diapers and if girls, a bow as well) personalities vary, and most of them share a common interest: Annoying and pranking Basil.

From oldest to youngest, the kids names are:

Tux

He is named Tux because of his black fur and white belly, also known for his sharp claws.

Howie

Agouti hooded and mostly white, also extra clumsy.

Basilette

Girl/child version of Basil, known as his “junior-niece.” She also likes handsome boys, especially Josh Hutcherson.

Little Scrabble

Junior of Scrabble, matching the violence-proneness.

Solo

The only boy white rat, with four white sisters, The Whiteys.

Little Basil

The junior of his uncle Basil.

Snow

The leader of The Whiteys, and wears a red bow.

Bleach

A member of The Whiteys, and wears a yellow bow.

Cloud

A member of The Whiteys, and wears a green bow.

Coconut

A member of The Whiteys, and wears a blue bow.

Not-Howie

He looks like Howie, but isn’t, and to tell the difference, he has the word “Not” on his white belly, showing he is Not-Howie.

Babble

Boy/child version of Scrabble, also known for being really talkative.

Coalette

Black fur like her two sisters right below, she is the leader of The Gothettes and wears a dark red bow, also has black gothic hair.

Raven

She is a member of The Gothettes and wears a dark yellow bow.

Blackberry

She is a member of The Gothettes and wears a dark green bow. Not to mention she’s usually the victim of Babble’s never-ending questions.

Soccerball

The youngest boy and child who looks almost just like Babble and Little Scrabble, has a soccerball picture printed on his belly, and is really into digital stuff.
